China and India both slowed manufacturing growth in July, Japan and South Korea also showed the worst performance this year. “Asia is being caught up in the mess in Europe and trade has finally started to plummet,” said Frederic Neumann, an economist at HSBC. “The latest figures seem to indicate that there will be more pain in exports.” Data show that China’s official purchasing managers’ index (PMI) fell to 50.1 from 50.2 in June, just above the 50 threshold of expansion and contraction; Japan’s July PMI dropped two points to 47.9; India July manufacturing output slowed down in July; while South Korea’s exports fell 8.8% YoY in July, the largest monthly drop this year; Australian manufacturing activity, which relies heavily on China’s resource demand, dropped to a three-year low in July ... Poor data in Asia highlights The United States and Europe have been struggling with the region’s dependence on the U.S. and Europe’s demand since 2008. Although the sovereign debt crisis in the euro zone has affected the economic growth in Europe for more than a year, the effect has only recently begun to reduce its demand for Asian exports.
