水华溘然而逝,电影界失去了一位卓越的艺术大师,观众失却了一位诚挚的朋友。 电影界许多同行由衷地敬重水华,首先是他那“呕心沥血,精益求精”的创作态度是人所不及的。水华是位现实主义艺术家,讲求“典型环境中的典型性格”。他对“典型环境”有独到的理解,他说“典型环境是由典型人物构成的。”这意味着在一部作品中,不但主要人物应当是典型,周围的所有人物都应当具有典型性。在《林家铺子》这部影片中他达到了这种境界:
