Although holography is rarely used in on-line NDT, a division of Marconi’s Space and Defense Systems division recently installed such a system to test immersion brazing components. Holographic methods are said to cost twice as much as conventional ultrasonic testing equipment and would be more effective in applications like scattering of ultrasound waves by cooling fins between layers of cooling plates. The system was developed in cooperation with the National Physical Laboratory and although the chamber and the one or two facilities such as the Atomic Arms Institute have similar facilities, the system is the first in-line holographic test setup to operate.
