Important articles published by Butterworth et al. (1992) illustrate the need for anti-schistosome vaccine research. While reviewing the studies on animal models of immunity and research on specific recombinant antigens, he also proposed that the vaccine used in humans differs from mice in that it must induce an immune response that is regulated only by the Th2 subline in T-helper cells. His analysis is based on the findings that the expression of the immune system in humans can be combined with both IgE and IgA, both of which appear to be products of Th2 cytokines. Given the promising promise of schistosoma vaccine research, we believe it is still too early to limit research to a single strategy and there are several equally valid research strategies.
