谭恩美与严歌苓都是当代最具影响力的美籍华裔作家。谭恩美被认为是最有影响力的土生华裔作家;严歌苓被称为是目前在北美最具实力、最具影响力的新移民作家。两位作家的代表作《喜福会》与《扶桑》都曾登上美国畅销书榜,从而引起评论界的广泛关注。其中,评论者对两位作家的文化归属问题一直有所争论。本文从东方主义出发,对比两个文本,进而在历史语境下论证双方不同的文化立场和文化认知。最后,分析出“新移民”文学作为华裔美国文学所彰显的社会意义。
Amy Tan and Yan Geling are both the most influential contemporary Chinese American writers. Amy Tan is considered the most influential native Chinese writer; Yan Geling is known as the most powerful and influential new immigrant writer in North America. The two writers’ masterpieces, “The Joy Luck Club” and “Fuso” all boarded the bestseller list in the United States, causing widespread concern in the critics. Among them, critics have always argued about the cultural ownership of the two writers. This article starts with orientalism, contrasts two texts, and then argues the two different cultural positions and cultural cognitions under the historical context. Finally, it analyzes the social significance of “new immigrants” literature as Chinese American literature.
