Several studies have shown that eating glucose 30 to 45 minutes prior to exercise has side effects on exercise. In these studies, such feeding decreased blood glucose rapidly with the onset of exercise, resulting in increased utilization of muscle glycogen and reduced maintenance time. It suggests that, to some extent, these effects are due to the ingestion of glucose causing too much insulin in the blood and a relatively small amount of glucagon. Since ingestion of fructose causes a small rise in blood glucose and insulin levels, it may not have the side effects caused by glucose ingestion prior to exercise as a source of exercise-induced sugars. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of pre-exercise dietary fructose on the use of muscle glycogen in a 30-minute periodic exercise.
