“汝为台湾人,不可不知台湾事”。1890年,在自家的院子里,父亲递给少年连横一本书,并语重心长地说了这么一段话。那是本《续修台湾府志》。父亲是商人,也是一个乡土观念强烈的爱国者,后来,连横听说,这本书是父亲花了二两银子买来的。连横很快读完了这本有关台湾的史书,有些感慨,原来自己生活成长在这样一块土地上,又觉得此书许多地方语焉不详,简单粗疏:他暗暗立志,要写一本完整厚重、直追史记汉书的台湾历史巨著。那时,在台北,轰轰烈烈席卷全台湾的洋务运动已近谢幕,立志把台湾现代化的首任台湾巡抚刘铭传,那精瘦干练的合肥人已挂冠而去。日本军阀对台湾虎视眈眈,大战迫在眉睫。
