For nearly two decades, wide area radio paging has been used to inform people that there is a need for service. Today, new technologies are changing from very wide area paging to a service that provides comprehensive information through a message center. The lack of resources for radio frequencies and the expansion of services require more efficient use of available channels using the European Association for Standardization of Telecommunications for large-capacity wide-area paging pan-European paging system (ERMES) standards or the enhanced POCSAG network APOC code used. Soon, two-way paging confirmed using the return channel will become a reality. The authors describe the expected penetration of wide area paging services around the world and how to meet capacity growth requirements
