在病穗上成熟后的病菌孢子不需要经过休眠期便具有立刻萌发的能力。1%蔗糖溶液比玉米植株汁液、土壤滤液和清水均有较好的促进孢子萌发的作用。蔗糖、葡萄糖和糖液浓度对厚垣孢子萌发的影响,差异不显著。当造采收的早玉米黑粉孢子,不论在何种培养液中,其萌发率均比上一年晚玉米上采集的并经过一个冬季的厚垣孢子的萌发率低。上一年采集的早、晚季玉米丝黑穗病菌孢子,无论在供试的那种培养液中,其萌发率均以晚玉米上的孢子为高。厚垣孢子在室内良好保存条件下经3年后,田间人工接种仍有7%的发病率,但在室内萌发试验中却未发现有萌发的孢子。
