It is known that the uterus sequesters estrogen (estradiol) more than any other organ in the body, and estrogen receptor-specific-estro-philin mediates this activity. The authors used the peroxidase-peroxidase technique, a monoclonal antibody against the human estrogen receptor protein, to study estrogen receptor distribution in isolated female genital tissue resected for various reasons. Vaginal specimens from 16 women of childbearing age, 5 menopausal women. Uterine specimens were taken from 23 women of childbearing age and 3 women of pre-life. Tubal specimens were collected from 26 women of childbearing age and 11 menopausal women. The above individuals had received no exogenous estrogen for at least 6 months prior to surgery. Tissue specimens used in this study do not include diseased tissue. Estrogen receptor density and localization are expressed as the depth of pigmentation in the slice.
