Peripheral neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial tumor in children. Although most of the tumors are diagnosed accurately, a small proportion of peripheral neuroblastoma (especially undifferentiated neuroblastoma) is still diagnosed to us as compared to other children with small blue-cell tumors A challenge. A panel of immunohistochemical markers and fusion transcripts can help diagnose these tumors but lack specificity and sensitivity for neuroblastomas. Since the transcription factor PHOX2B is highly specific for peripheral neuroblastoma originating from the peripheral autonomic nervous system, the authors predict that the PHOX2B immunolabeling can be used as a diagnostic tool for peripheral small blue cell tumors.
