The concept of the same origin of calligraphy and painting was put forward by Tang Yan’s painter Zhang Yanyuan, who summarized his previous understanding of calligraphy and painting relations and raised it as an abstract theory. Zhang Yanyuan considered that painting and calligraphy was one of the earliest, and his explanation of this was based on the pictographs among the six books.
