Anthropology and Modernity The modernity of Wenceslas Hiberg does not only refer to the “present” in time. It refers to a construction that is full of ideology, an attitude, not a “real” thing. It comes from the West and is a concept closely linked to progress. Anthropology was, in the past, a modern discipline in Western civilization; eastern Europe after totalitarianism became a symbol of modernity because of its self-reflection and its capacity to address the many pressing problems of the contemporary world. However, anthropology’s ability to open up broader areas of research, to go beyond the study of exotic peculiar customs, and to regain its past status will depend on the efforts of anthropologists.
