Purpose and Structure Spark plugs are used to obtain a large enough spark to ignite the mixture of gas and air in the cylinder of a gas cylinder. The spark plug (Fig. 1) has a steel shell 5 threaded at its lower part for screwing the spark plug into the spark plug hole in the cylinder head of the engine. The upper part has a hexagonal face 4, which can be screwed in and unscrewed with a wrench.
