平南闽南话保留了不少汉语上古音的形式并且深受平南粤方言的影响，历史音变的形式主要有如下几点：保存了上古音鼻冠音声母[mb－]和[－]，保留了上古音清界音声母[h-]，有许多上古[st－]复辅音声母分化的字例……受粤方言的影响，平南闽南话产生了[∫]声母，「ts]、[tsh]两声母消失；鼻化韵大为减少，只剩五个（厦门话12个），塞韵尾[-k]消失，只剩下[-p]、[-t][－？]三个塞韵尾；鼻尾韵增加，共19个（厦门话13个）其中、、、四韵很可能是借自粤方言。
