形式主义音乐美学思想在现代西方音乐中具有深远的影响。它形成的完整的理论体系就是自律论,即组成自律论的核心内容,因此讲形式主义美学思想就不能脱离自律论。它的形成和确立是由多方面的因素共同作用而成的,这其中就包括历代先贤在哲学、音乐学、音乐美学等方面的孜孜追求和不断探索,浪漫主义音乐潮流的日渐衰微以及实证主义哲学思想在音乐领域不断深入等等。这一切集合在一起就使得形式主义音乐美学思想的确立成为了必然,使它成为了现代西方音乐思想长期发展的必然产物,即是历史的必然。
