阿瓦提前陆盆地位于塔里木盆地西部。新生代柯坪山脉以ＮＥ向的沙井子断裂为主滑面，剧烈向ＳＳＥ方向逆冲，在沙井子断裂ＳＥ侧沉积了巨厚的新生界，向ＳＥ方向急剧减薄，形成典型的不对称挠曲沉积盆地。这种前陆盆地是大陆板块碰撞形成陆相盆地后，再次发育在造山带前缘的盆地，它发育的大地构造位置、时间以及成因，与周缘前陆盆地和弧后前陆盆地均不相同，可称之为陆内前陆盆地，是第三类前陆盆地。
