日本炼镍厂主要是处理新卡列多尼亚氧化镍矿、西里伯岛的一些氧化镍矿以及加拿大的含镍12%的硫化铜—镍精矿。日本处理氧化镍矿并提取镍所采用的几个工艺流程是: 1.镍锍转炉吹炼所得的镍高锍直接电解或镍高锍焙烧、氧化亚镍还原熔炼、阳极镍电解(可以得到一般的或高纯的电解镍和镍盐); 2.鼓风炉还原熔炼成镍铁再精炼; 3.氧化镍矿回转窑还原熔炼成镍铁,即所谓的粒铁法; 4.氧化镍矿电炉还原熔炼成镍铁(新卡列多尼亚所用的方法)。
