1936年2月,红军东渡黄河,开赴华北抗日前线。2月21日过河后,红一师和兄弟部队紧密配合,沿同蒲路南下,占领了汾河流域广大地区。为粉碎蒋阎军围剿红军的阴谋,扩大抗日民族统一战线,保卫陕北苏区,4月15日,红军暂停东征。红一师在师长陈赓的率领下,在回师陕北途中,4月17日攻克山西吉县县城。那时,我家租住在县城东城墙内的一户张姓人家的小院里。红军攻城那天,家里人正在吃早饭,突然响起枪声,只见院对面力马垣坡顶上和挂甲山顶上,都有人时隐时现,并有少数马匹。阎军用早已准备好的沙袋,急速关堵了城门,隐藏在城门楼和我家居住的院墙外。下午4时左右,枪声密集,红军发起总攻。将近黄昏,红军冒着阎锡山守城军队的密集火力,前仆后继,登上云梯,打垮守城阎军,占领了东城门。红军集结在东城墙内,除保留部分守卫外,大部分分头继续向城内挺进。

Towards evening, the Red Army braved the Yan Xishan defensive army intensive firepower, fought, climb the ladder, collapsed defending the city of Yan Jun, occupation of the East Gate. The Red Army assembled in the east wall, in addition to retaining some of the guards, most of the separate continued to advance to the city.
