约瑟夫·格利登因出生于美国的加利福尼亚州,由于家境贫困,他小学毕业后,无法继续读书,只得去帮人家放羊。可约瑟夫喜欢读书,希望靠读书来改变自己的命运,所以常常在放羊时埋头读书。可那些羊并不理解他的心情,总是在他读书时撞倒栅栏,跑到地里损坏了庄稼,为此约瑟夫·格利登因受到老板的训斥。他决定找出一个能防止羊群冲出栅栏的好办法来。他经过细心的观察发现,羊群能冲倒用铁丝做成的栅栏,却不敢去碰用蔷薇做成的围墙,因为蔷薇有刺。他试着栽了一些蔷薇在铁丝栅栏旁边,果然解决了问题。
Joseph Gledden was born in California, the United States, due to poor family, after graduating from primary school, unable to continue their studies, had to help others sheep. But Joseph likes reading and hopes to change his own destiny by reading books, so he often studies hard while laying sheep. But those sheep did not understand his feelings, always knocking the fence on his reading, ran to the ground damaged the crops, for which Joseph Gladden was reprimanded by the boss. He decided to find a good way to keep the flock out of the fence. After careful observation, he found that the flock could pass down the fence made of wire, but did not dare to touch the wall made of roses because the rose had thorns. He tried to plant some roses next to the wire fence, which really solved the problem.
