I. Introduction Thomas Hardy is one of the most outstanding poets and realistic novelists in the history of English literature. His novels often cover the sufferings and tragedies of the lower class people in the process of British transformation from feudal society to capitalist society as the main theme. Hardy’s life, published a total of nearly 20 novels, of which “Tess of the Durberty” as his masterpiece, but also one of the classic novels in the history of British literature. By describing the unfortunate experience of Tess in her life, the novel reveals the patriarchal system of Britain detaining women in the process of gradual infiltration of capitalism into the countryside, emphasizing chastity and suppressing the social status of women
