笹川临风夺得了日本中国俗文学研究史上的多个第一：他不仅是日本第一部中国小说戏曲专史作者，也是第一部将俗文学与诗文并列的中国文学史作者。但他的中国俗文学研究热忱和成果仅集中在19世纪末的数年间，当时他还是一个初出校门的青年学者。笹川临风的戏曲研究素养和兴趣明显高于小说，曾写出近代日本第一篇南戏专论，晚年又将《琵琶记》编译为日本物语体文学，笹川临风的中国文学研究，特别是他的《中国文学史》，在中日两国都引起较大反响。“,”SASAKAWA Rinpu created many firsts in study of Chinese popular literature,He was not only the author of the first Chinese novel and drama history in Japan,But also was the author of the first history of Chinese literature including popular literature and elegant literature in Japan,but his enthusiasm and achievements on the research of Chinese literature only appeared in a few years at the end of the 19th century,when he was still a young scholar just graduated from college.His drama re-search accomplishment and interest were obviously higher than that of the novel,he wrote the first monograph of study of the Southern Opera in modern Japan,in later years,he put the compilation of Pipaji in the Japanese language.The history of Chinese literature,has caused great influence in both China and Japan.
