Although ordinary drip irrigation systems have many advantages, their use in some areas is still limited due to the large investment they require. Scientists at the Jodhpur Institute of Drought Center in India have developed a simple and inexpensive method of irrigation based on the concept of drip irrigation. The idea is to use abandoned medical plastic infusion device for irrigation. The unit has a 1-liter container, inflow regulator and 1-meter long tube that hangs on a one-meter-high wooden stake next to the plant (see photo). One end of the container has a hole for water. Any blockage problem can be solved by squeezing or slightly raising the top of the plastic tube. Field trials of vegetables (eg cauliflower) and saplings are comparable to the more complex and expensive drip irrigation systems.
