Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is exploring new laser technologies for a variety of potential applications, but its main focus is on potential space applications, including satellite defense and ballistic missile defense. While it is possible to make faster use of surface-based (including land-based and surface-based) air defense and missile defense applications, some DoD officials and lawmakers believe that the inherent advantages of laser weapons are best served in space-carrying applications. This view is reflected in the Department of Defense’s decision to cut 20 million U.S. dollars from the funding requested for the FY 81 Navy’s High Energy Laser Program and to add another 2,500 to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Multi-million dollar funding to demonstrate the potential of high-energy lasers for satellite defense. This amount of money is twice as large as that part of the council’s plan.
