A single mode fiber optic acousto - optic frequency shifter driven by a surface acoustic wave device fabricated on ST - cut quartz crystal and operating at 50 MHz is introduced. Based on single-mode optical fiber mode theory and surface acoustic wave theory, the interaction between the two and the mechanism of modulation are discussed. The test results of the device show that the use of single-mode fiber as a modulated signal carrier, so as to achieve frequency shift is feasible
