The theory of conceptual metaphor holds that the cognitive subject can experientially represent and process the abstract concept through the experience of perceived movement. The basis of metaphorical thinking is concrete experience, so metaphor can become the bridge between the abstract concept of “power ” and the experience of body perception. Based on the E-PRIME experiment, this study examines the characterization of the vertical orientation of the cognitive processing of the abstract power terms in English and Chinese by different bilingual level bilingual speakers. The results show that: 1) Cognitive processing activates the spatial metaphor of “up and down” vertical orientation, inducing “lexical-spatial” effect. 2) Bilingual proficiency of bilingual speakers is better than that of the conceptual representation of the second language power words. 3) Learners’ L2 proficiency affects their ability of psychological representation of second language power words. Compared with low-level English learners, high-level English learners have a higher conceptual representation of English wordings.
