The amount of growth hormone (GH) secreted by the pituitary after 30 years of age in adults is gradually reduced. Because of the large fluctuations in serum GH concentrations within 24 hours, the authors indirectly infer blood GH levels by measuring insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1, also known as Interleukin-C).
