1929年1月,毛泽东、朱德率红四军主力离开井冈山进军赣南、闽西,随后在赣南建立红色政权。中央苏区先后辖江西、福建、闽赣、粤赣、赣南等5个省级苏维埃政府,其中有3个设在赣南。在党和苏维埃政府的领导下,赣南苏区开展了多层次丰富多彩的体育活动。从运动形式上来看,有体育运动大会、各类单独项目比赛和体育健身活动;从体育运动种类来看,有篮球、足球,体操,田径运动,也有战争背景下特有的劈刺刀、扔手榴弹,还有传统的武术、体育游戏等;从参与人员来看,有党和苏维埃政府领导、红军战士、青少年儿童和普通群众。在各级赤色体育委员会的领导下,教育管理部门积极发展俱乐部、创办各类学校,并依托这些平台纷纷开展了各具特色体育活动。俱乐部侧重社会教育,积极开展“普通操、器械操、拳术、球术、田径赛、劈刺、竞争游戏等”。红军学校经常开展球类竞赛和径赛,各级列宁学校积极适合年龄阶段的体育游戏,如“杠上”、“环上”、“赛跑”、“体操”等。

Red Army schools often play ball games and track and field, Lenin schools at all levels actively adapt to the age-old sports games, such as “streak ”, “ring ”, “racing ”, “gymnastics ” and so on.
