很多人都爬过大江南北的名山，但恐怕少有人会在登攀途中陡生疑惑：中国人为什么要造石级到山顶？观赏山水画的专家学者或美术爱好者，也大都不曾注意一个事实：中国山水画为什么没有地平线？这样两个幼稚的问题，却困扰着日本学者中野美代子，长期思考的结果就是她写成的《龙居景观：中国人的空间艺术》。该书充分利用古今中西各种材料，取纸上文献与地下实物互相补证，游走于文字与图像之间，钩沉索隐，探赜析微，给出了不妨称为“中野假说”的推论。
