The MOF project explores the possibility of a building as both a product and a producer. The design of the building itself is so conceived and constructed as a by-product of another process, rice straw. The project is located on a paddy field in Kunming, China, where large quantities of rice straw are accumulated and become waste during agricultural production. The project proposes collecting these stalks and reusing them as a substrate for mycelium (fungus used for mushroom cultivation). This fungus has been used in the insulation of commercial buildings due to its fire-resistant, tough, light-weight properties. The project uses discarded rice straw to grow mushrooms, increasing the seasonal yield of cultivated land. Mushrooms
