After Mies, the second president of the German National Weimar School of Architecture (“Baulhaus”) came to the United States, he has been focusing on the potential of finding steel and glass in buildings. Now that the opportunity has come, he and another architect, Johnson, are invited to design a 39-story office building at the Garden Boulevard in Manhattan, New York, for a large, capital-rich company producing whiskey: the Seagram Building. This is a true glass box. It is absolutely symmetrical, square, straight up and down. The machine is as accurate as the amber glass makes it clear and noble. This is the first all-glass high-rise building in the history of architecture, it is full of breath of the new era, solidly with the classical spires and expressive stones of the skyscrapers around it.
