Presupposition trigger, as a part of pragmatic presupposition, plays a crucial role in communication. This dissertation uses the second TV debate in the 2012 US presidential election as the corpus and uses the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to conduct data statistics, data analysis and data comparison of the corpus, respectively. The purpose of this dissertation is to distinguish between the two parties using the default trigger language The types and the default triggers they use. Through the research, we can see that the two sides of the debate cleverly apply the theory of the presuppositions to promote the platform, attack the opponents, defend themselves, persuade the voters and gain the support of voters, which laid the foundation for the eventual victory in the general election.
