In 1988, Bergey and Stinson identified two streptococcal proteins with molecular weights of 9 and 15 kDa. They bind to the basement membrane of myocardium and kidney tissue in vitro and competitively inhibit this binding with heparin and certain aminoglycosides (GAGs). Later, some scholars perfused rabbit glomeruli with streptococcal extracts in vivo and observed that a 9 kDa protein was deposited. The authors isolated and purified from S. pyogenes a 9KDa aminoglycan binding protein (GAG-BP), and reported its properties.
