The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on the 16th 2003 in Geneva, Switzerland, that a new coronavirus that has never been found in humans is the causative agent of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The pathogen has been able to discover so quickly that it owes its full cooperation to 13 laboratories from 10 different countries around the world. There is ample evidence that the virus is closely related to the prevailing SARS and will eventually be identified as the causative agent of SARS. Dr. David Heymann, Executive Director of the WHO Infectious Diseases Program, underlined the alarming rate of SARS research and the in-depth work between laboratories around the world has led to the rapid identification of what pathogens cause SARS. The successful identification of coronaviruses enables scientists to confidently reach out to other aspects of SARS research. For example, many laboratories have begun to reveal the SARS virus
