“大学之道,在明明德,在亲民,在止于至善。”大学者,“囊括大典、网罗众家”之学府也。大学是神圣的精神殿堂,它是广博的知识中心,是人才的摇篮、创造的源泉和思想的故乡。每一所成功的大学,都是因为至少有一位卓越的大学校长,如上世纪二三十年代北京大学的蔡元培、蒋梦麟,清华大学的梅贻琦,浙江大学的竺可桢等。作为“掌门人”的校长是一所大学的灵魂和引路人。如果把颇有学问的教授称为大师的话,那么大学校长应该是大家。他集大师的智慧与见识、大师的果断与坚毅以及教育家的魅力与艺术于一身。在很大程度上,他不是权力的象征,而是人格的象征、学术的象征。

University is the sacred temple of the spirit, it is a vast knowledge center, is the cradle of talent, the source of creation and the hometown of ideas. Each successful university is due to at least one remarkable university president, such as Cai Yuanpei and Jiang Menglin from Peking University in the 1920s and 1930s, Mei Yiqi from Tsinghua University, and Zhu Kezhen from Zhejiang University. The headmaster is the soul and guide of a university. If the highly regarded professor is called a master, then the university president should be everyone. He combines master’s wisdom and insight, master’s determination and perseverance, and educator’s charm and art in one. To a large extent, he is not a symbol of power, but a symbol of personality and academic symbol.
