有一次,上海伶界联合会缺少救济金,著名武生演员盖叫天自告奋勇,愿为贫寒同业唱一台“搭桌戏”(合作义务戏),戏码定为《英雄义》(又名《一箭仇》或《曾头市》),从卢俊义带着梁山头领下山起,到史文恭被擒。消息传出,麒老牌(周信芳)首先报名参加,愿为盖老五(盖叫天,因其行五)配演卢俊义。当时在沪的诸行名家,都愿为此尽心效力,出现了少有的英雄大聚义盛况,参加演出的还有:饰林冲的赵松樵、饰石秀的李仲林、饰李逵的李瑞来、饰武松的张翼鹏、饰燕青的王筱芳、饰大虎的陈福林、以及扮演顾大嫂、孙二娘的周菊芳、阎少泉,扮演阮氏兄弟的杨善华、王斌飞等,阵容相当整齐,演出时更是配合默契,可谓珠联璧合,相得益彰,效果极佳,成为京剧界广泛流传的一段佳话。
