Objective To understand the status of college students’ internet addiction and their relationship with self-consistency. Methods 434 college students were surveyed by the Internet Addiction Scale (IAD) and Self-Consistency Scale (SCCS). Results The prevalence of internet addiction among college students was 13.36%. Students with internet addiction were worse than those without internet addiction (98.67 ± s) in self-consistency scores, self-experience disharmony, self-flexibility and self- 10.25 / 87.28 ± 12.07, 47.41 ± 8.84 / 44.13 ± 7.35, 39.24 ± 8.15 / 45.56 ± 5.13, 18.47 ± 3.37 / 16.71 ± 3.50). Students with low degree of self-consistency had significantly higher internet addiction rate than those with high self-consistency (χ2 = 32.901, P <0.001). There was a significant correlation between college students’ internet behaviors and self-harmony (r = 0.400, P <0.01). College students with internet addiction are more likely to experience discordance between self and experience, higher self-discipline and less flexibility. Conclusion Internet addiction can lead to lower levels of self-consistency and thus affect their physical and mental health.
