The synthesis of acetic acid from methanol and carbon monoxide using a rhodium catalyst and methyl iodide as a cocatalyst has been commercialized. However, due to its limited resources and high costs, rhodium has now achieved its initial results in an attempt to find an alternative catalyst. A new catalyst system is reported here, which may replace the conventional rhodium catalyst. We found that nickel-based resurrecting catalysts such as Ni-La 2 O 3-Ru have high activity for methanation of carbon monoxide and direct hydrogenation of activated carbon.
