Objective To study the relationship between memory function and diabetes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) in middle age in order to educate and treat patients more effectively. METHODS: Subjects were middle-aged (40 to 60 years old) NIDDM patients and 30 non-diabetic demographic factors, excluding cerebrovascular disease, drug and alcohol abuse, dementia and severe mental illness, which may affect memory function , No hypoglycemic episodes on the day of diabetes test. Memory function was measured by Wechsler memory scale. Personality and emotional status were measured by EPQ, SAS and SDS. Cerebral perfusion imaging (SPECT) was performed in 11 patients in each group. Results The score of memory test in diabetic group was lower than that in control group (P <0.05), and anxiety and depression were more serious than those in control group (P <0.05). SPECT shows that there is indeed a low perfusion of regional cerebral blood flow in NIDDM patients. Conclusion Middle-aged patients with NIDDM do have memory loss, and local hypoperfusion of cerebral blood flow may be one of the reasons. The patient’s psychosomatic factors are related to memory function. Mental health can promote cognitive functions such as memory. Health care workers and their families should understand this and take appropriate treatment and education measures
