Hong Kong and Singapore occupy the world’s largest container port’s throne, it seems will continue. Singapore was listed as the world’s largest container port in earlier years, but its throughput in 1992 was 7.56 million TEU, an increase of only 20% over 1991; in the same year, its throughput in Hong Kong increased by nearly 30% over 1991, Reached 7.97 million TEU, ranking first in the world’s ports. In order to maintain its crown as the largest container port in the world, Hong Kong is determined to invest huge sums of money in the expansion of the port so as to further increase its handling capacity. Kwai Chung Pier 8 is under construction. The first berths will be delivered to use by mid-year. Other berths were completed in 1995 and the annual handling capacity will be increased by 2 million TEU. Pier 9 is already under planning and construction will begin. If the Sino-British relations are developing normally, the terminal is also expected to be completed by mid-1995.
