Metaphor is not only regarded as a rhetoric way as exaggeration, simile or parallelism, but a way of thinking and the cognition towards the real world. Metaphoric idioms, bearing the features of metaphor, reflect the cognition of a certain group of people,their history, religions, ways of living, conventions and customs and so on. This paper mainly compares English idioms and Chinese idioms from the aspects of each nation’s culture and points out the influence of negative pragmatic transfer from native language and cultural systems in the process of second-language acquisition. It is of great importance for second-language learners to realize the importance of cognitive differences in learning the second language.
