焦亮出生在湖南省兴宁县,屡试不第,遂参加天地会,创立招军堂。金田起义后,投奔太平军。1852年4月被清军俘获,被赛尚阿捏称天德王,送往北京。7月在北京牺牲。后来,他的大弟焦王明也参加了太平军。二弟焦玉晶和妻子许月桂加入天地会,发动反清武装斗争,配合太平军行动。可见,焦亮及其家人与太平天国有着紧密的联系。
