The telecommunications industry in France, with about 45,000 employees and a revenue of 8.6 billion U.S. dollars in 1996, is the fourth largest telecom industry in the world with prominent companies such as Alcael, Thomson, Sagem and Matra. With the gradual liberalization of the French telecommunications market and in February this year, 69 countries signed the WTO agreement on telecommunications infrastructure in Geneva. The signatories must open their own markets for open competition. France is committed to implementing the WTO agreement on January 1, 1998 Day full release. The telecom industry has lost its special relationship with the operation industry and must carry out technological development autonomously. As a result, 20% of its revenue is devoted to its own research and development center, which is leading the market through technology. Entering the overseas markets, especially in the developing countries, is one way out. CNET, a research center of France Telecom, employs more than 4,000 people and has developed VideoText, ISDN and digital cellular ATMs. Leading technologies are: Satellite Communications - Alcatel Satellite Communications Group in partnership with Aerospatiale and Alenia Spazio, Satellite Communications Group of Matra and Mareoni, British Aerospace and ANT. Mobile Communications: Matra Nortel Matra, a joint venture with Nortel of Canada, has become the third largest provider of GSM infrastructure worldwide, with
