今年10月初,全国见义勇为“十大英雄”评选。全国共推荐30名侯选人,李卫东是湖北省推荐的惟一人选。这些候选人都被誉为“百姓英雄”。李卫东等30名候选人简要事迹材料于10月10日开始刊登在《人民日报》、《法制日报》、新华网、公安网、中青网、新浪网等媒体上,让全国人民投票选出他们心目中的“十大英雄”。11月23日,全国见义勇为“十二大英雄”揭榜,李卫东成为全国见义勇为“十二大英雄”中惟一位板车的,出席了中央综治委、中华见义勇为基金会联合举办的全国见义勇为表彰大会。
