地名是人类社会发展的历史产物,在一定程度上可以反映一个时代和一个地区自然的或社会的(政治的、经济的、文化的、军事的等等)某些情况。所以,某种意义上,地名是人类发展的活“化石”。把回族与地名联系起来,探索回族聚居地地名,发现这些地名的细微之演化,这对于中国回族的来源、结构、分布,回族的军事生活和经济生活,宗教生活和宗教建筑,宗教传播路线,姓氏与人物,自然条件和风物特产的调查和研究,都会起到辅助作用。本文所指回族地名主要指涉及回族的地名。尽管它在地名的语言学如音、形、位、类等方面,同汉语差不多,但在地名社会性(语言地理的区域性、历史的继承性、时代性)上影响颇大,并形成许多具有回族特色的地名,有鲜明的民族性。
