  Article by Ozioma Egwuonwu
To me, the culture of peace is a state of mind and a set of values. It is a way of being and doing that is based on harmony and connection. The culture of peace is rooted in the values of love, unity and wholeness. It derives from a perspective of the world that understands that we are not only essential for each other’s survival, but in order for our planet to thrive.
Today, there are many challenges and obstacles that stand in the way of enabling us to achieve a global culture of peace. But I do believe that with concerted efforts and dedicated action, peace is attainable. In the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace adopted by the United Nations in 1999, it is affirmed that “Progress in the fuller development of a culture of peace comes about through values, attitudes, modes of behaviour and ways of life conducive to the promotion of peace among individuals, groups and nations.” I believe that when the gap narrows between aspiration and achievement, the world will know happiness. And when the world achieves happiness, it will know peace. Respect and honor for the achievements of others, as well as belief in your own potentials are essential to building the culture of peace and a better world for all of us. If a country truly respects another country and its people, would it so easily bomb its people, its museums, its cultural heritage, its places of historical significance? I do not believe so.
For many of us, Mahatma Gandhi’s exhortation to “Be the change you wish to see” is fundamental to creating the culture of peace, because it truly does start from within. When I feel a sense of accomplishment no matter how big or how small, I feel at peace. Peace lies in the achievements and aspirations of everyday people, as well as their communities, societies and governments sharing responsibility and actively working towards nurturing individual and collective transformation so that the culture of peace takes a permanent place in their existence.
As a member of New Future Foundation, an NGO with the United Nations ECOSOC consultative status, I am proud to participate and lead initiatives that work towards building the culture of peace, including recently hosting in New York a side event during the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW57) where we explored ways to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women.
Creating the culture of peace requires each and every single one of us to be innovators and engage our creative capacities in initiatives that empower us to be contributors to the co-creation of the culture of peace individually as well as collectively. One such initiative is the International Day for Dreamers, a grass roots initiative, led by Dream Activists (www.dayfordreamers.com) advocating for peace and progress through addressing the gap that exists between aspiration and achievement worldwide.
It is imperative that we – today’s young - who should be at the forefront of cultivating and advocating for the culture of peace in every arena of the human activity do not become disheartened and lose faith in the belief that peace is possible. Peace IS possible! However, today’s peace is fragile and must be continually renewed. The culture of peace must be fed and nurtured alongside sustainability. By nurturing peace in tandem with sustainability, the kind of peace we cultivate for our world will be built to last.

My generation has been born into a rapidly globalizing world that is still trying to counter the most basic problems of the humanity - hunger, disease, poverty, discrimination, intolerance and violence. More over, we are constrained by the absence of dialogue between nations, races, ethnicities, and religions despite the great progress achieved in technology, medicine, and other fields of sciences. I believe today’s young individuals like me need education and guidance to put these innovations to good use. Without morally and ethically correct teachings, the youth - myself included - would not realize and make use of these innovative tools towards achieving the goal of a more peaceful and secure world. I believe that the Culture of Peace has the essential elements which can provide the teaching and the hope we need to achieve this goal. I consider the culture of peace as a new perception of peace-building and hope for today’s youth.
My first interaction with the Culture of Peace activists was at a gathering of the United Nations called “United For A Culture Of Peace Through Interfaith Harmony,” in which interfaith dialogue, tolerance and cooperation were emphasized more strongly than I have ever seen before. Religious leaders, civil society and governments representatives were all joined hands promoting peace and harmony through the positive power of all religions. When this excitingly spiritual and motivating event ended, I realized that the Culture of Peace could really motivate people, give them hope, and educate them with a teaching that they need to know to truly eradicate wars, intolerance, poverty, and other scourges of the humankind that undermine peace in our world.
As Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon said in his opening remarks in the 2012 High-Level Forum on The Culture of Peace, “To fundamentally tackle the roots of conflict, we need to promote an understanding of our common humanity. We need a culture that upholds human dignity and human life.” The Culture of Peace is a crucial teaching and a set of values that can serve as a new kind of peace-builder between communities even before conflicts surface. The Culture of Peace also plays a major role in empowering the youth to take active role in creating a better world in which dialogue, cooperation, and equality are the main motivational force in relations between communities, and where problems are resolved proactively.
The youth of today need the Culture of Peace as their guide and not the culture of war and fear that keeps the human civilization in a vicious cycle of violence and intolerance. We, the youth, live in the era of globalization where communities become more interdependent and interconnected, and, therefore, need to change our mindset about the concept of peace. As it is stated in the United Nations Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, peace “not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.” Through the Culture of Peace, I believe that my generation and the succeeding ones can actually address and solve the problems with the help of this novel mindset, a totally new perspective on peace-building.
The Culture of Peace is my hope and motivation to commit myself to make this millennium a period of dialogue, collaboration and peace between the peoples of this world.

We live in a culture of domination that relies on aggression and competition, rather than communication and cooperation. Evidence of this warped culture can be seen when observing the youth; how are young kids and teens treating one another? Our youth is a reflection of our society and its teachings.
As a young person motivated to do something positive for my generation, I began observing our youth by holding discussions in my former high school with the Gay Straight Alliance Club. At first, I came in with goal of teaching basic gender and feminist theory. However, I realized that the students did not need to learn theory; they were experiencing it each and every day. Students were in uncomfortable situations daily that degraded them due to their sexual orientation.
Symbolic forms of violence were being enacted towards students, simply because they were girls or due to their sexuality. It's no surprise; look at the world around us and our media outlets. The language and images around gender and sex in pop culture is extremely problematic. It renders women as powerless sex objects and men as violent and aggressive dominators. Young people see these images and in trying to perform their gender correctly, they often end up hurting themselves and others.
Rather than lecturing, I allowed them to speak to each other and share their stories in a safe space. This helped foster understanding and awareness. Most importantly, I asked the students "what can you guys do as a group and individually to change the culture here?" The students enjoyed this discussion and were surprised when they realized that I did not have the answer and that I was looking to them for solutions. This empowered the students to know that they have the power to initiate change.
Tapping into this creative power is essential to spread the culture of peace. To do this we must raise awareness and understanding. One way to do this is by doing what humans have been doing for hundreds of years: sharing stories! I am one of the creators of the Sister Circle Collective, a group of women who gather in a safe space to talk about gender and equality issues and possible solutions.
Hearing stories from different women raised our awareness of the urgent issue of violence against women. Nearly all of us in the group, if not all, have experienced some form of violence. The stories are all different but share the same thread-- we are women of all shapes, colors, and sexualities, yet we experienced oppressive, hurtful and degrading situations simply because we are women.
Empowering youth and women is essential in creating the culture of peace. The Programme of Action on Culture of Peace of the United Nations highlights the equality between women and men as one of the key areas of action in building the culture of peace. Youth need to know there are more choices than being a submissive woman or a dominant man. Women's voices need to be heard, the silence must end and they too must be empowered to know they can create solutions. It is imperative to have safe spaces in schools and universities to speak not only about gender and equality issues, but what the culture of peace is, what it means to each one of us and how it feels like to internalize it. Each one of us is a creator in this world and it is up to everyone to spread the culture of peace.- both individually as well as collectively.
