US Social Sciences and Humanities Planning Delegation Visiting the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences on January 12, 1981, Frederick Wakeman, Vice Chairman of Central Plains American-Chinese Academic Exchange Committee, Professor of Chinese History and Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, ) Talking about the situation of the institute, the following is a brief introduction: The Chinese Institute of the University of California, Berkeley was founded in 1958 and was funded by the Ford Foundation. At that time, the emphasis was on training postgraduates, that is, to allow students who study social sciences to study Chinese and to study the problems of modern China. The teaching materials used are all about vernacular Chinese. Between 1958 and 1968 more than 100 students were trained, more than 50 of whom received doctoral degrees. In 1968, the Ford Foundation and the University of California found that the number of students was too large and the methods of training were not suitable for their needs. Therefore, the method was changed to continue training students on a smaller scale and to expand modern China to include ancient China. Students should also Can read classical Chinese.
