Microeconomic Implications: Efficiency and Competition There are similarities and significant differences between the establishment of a single European market and the completion of customs unions. But whether it is similar or not, it proves that the current internal market plan has a considerable impact on the economies of the member countries and that this effect may far outweigh the customs union that is the foundation of the European Economic Community. The Customs Union eliminated the Community’s internal tariffs and introduced a common external tariff rate on non-member countries. This stimulus for industrial production in the community is enormous. And not at the expense of trade with non-members: the average customs tariff of member countries to non-member countries
