To understand fetal growth and lipid binding levels by measuring serum levels of lipid-binding proteins in 28 infants of less than gestational age (SGA) and 34 infants of age eligible for gestational age (AGA) relationship. Blood samples for the determination of lipidin were collected within the first 24 hours after birth. Serum lipid-binding protein levels were significantly higher in neonates (SGA and AGA) than in normal children (28.7 ± 17.0 mg / L t vs 9.3 ± 6.1 mg / L, P <0.01). There was also a significant difference in lipid-binding protein levels between SGA and AGA (23.2 ± 14.8 mg / L vs 33.2 ± 17.5 mg / L, P = 0.02). Serum lipid-binding protein levels in all newborns were positively correlated with birth weight and head circumference (r = 0.27, P <0.05) and (r = 0.30, P <0.05), respectively. Serum lipid-binding protein levels were independent of the gestational age, length of birth, blood glucose level, and time spent collecting blood samples after birth. All neonatal lipid-binding protein levels in male and female infants were 30.0 ± 19.7 mg / L vs 28.0 ± 15.5 mg / L, respectively, with no gender differences. The results showed that the positive correlation between serum lipid levels and birth weight and hyperlipidemia can not be explained solely by the low percentage of body fat. SGA has lower levels of lipid-binding proteins than AGA and does not imply that infants with intrauterine growth retardation have insulin resistance early in life, but may be a factor in the future development of insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes.
