刀客是陕西地方社会的一个特殊群体。自清中期始,原有社会秩序严重失控,等级阶层不断变化,灾疫频发,经济亦趋于衰微,流民大批出现,甚于以往,成为社会痼疾。闲散民众和流民无法被正式的社会组织吸纳,刀客之滥蔚然成风。道光之际,随着刀客数量不断增多且地区分布范围逐步扩展,最终形成了刀客会。刀客之名的由来,与刀客们手持临潼关山镇(今属阎良区)所造的关山
